It's hard to find a bar in Georgia when you really need one.
I hit the road on the Friday before Memorial Day for the first road trip in
more years than I like to admit. Rolled out of Casa de'Easy at 7:45 AM on a
warm morning, heading for I-75 North. Clawed my way out of Tampa, and hooked
up with my fellow travelers just south of Ocala. We were heading for Blue
Ridge, GA as a jumping off point for our tour of the good roads in north GA,
western NC, and south TN. It was a good day to travel, traffic wasn't bad
and we were doing fine till one motorcycle got to 100 miles on the tank, and
started sputtering, gagging, puking, etc. final diagnosis was crap in the
tank that only got concentrated enough to cause a problem after some miles,
so we just made it a point to stop every 90 miles or so, and gas up. And, it
wasn't even a pony bike.
Did well, stopped for gas, crossed into GA, and then traffic got thick, the
road got hot, and the construction zones were entirely too frequent. At the
next stop, I pulled out the trusty road map, and suggested an alternative
route, which was accepted by acclaimation, and things got better,
immediately. 441 through GA is a mix of 2 and 4 lanes, with good scenery,
hay fields, pine trees, and small towns. Just the ticket for a man needing
an asphalt high. Traffic was light, cops were saving up for Friday night,
and Popeye's was a fine place for a light lunch, and a big sweet tea. 400
miles into the day brought us to Dublin GA, and a search for a cheap motel.
After consultations with the slack jawed locals, we decided closer to the
interstate, and a higher price was cheaper than losing a scooter to light
fingered, slack jawed locals.
Now, we come to the hard to find a bar part. Seems Dublin hasn't been wet,
all that long. We looked diligently and finally found a chicken wing place
with a full bar, patio, and beer by the pitcher. A cold beer tastes mighty
good on a hot afternoon when you're on the road. Especially when you're
drinking in almost the only place in Dublin, GA. I think I was over served,
because my legs weren't as steady as usual, and I felt pretty full. Luckily,
the Jameson Inn was just across the parking lot, and they had down and out
rooms, so we called it a night. Subway was also just across the parking lot,
so I made the most of the neighborhood, and turned in early.
We did a breakfast Saturday morning at a place called "Smoker's Inn", a full
smoking place, that didn't allow minors. They take their smokes pretty
serious in Dublin. Food wasn't all that good, but the 2 nicotine fiends in
the crowd were happy. We were rolling by 9:30, and did a good job of missing
the roads that we needed to be on for the rest of the day. We'd get on the
one we wanted, go through some little town, and lose it at a poorly marked
intersection, and then spend the next hour hoping to get to where we need to
be. Saw some good country, and just missed a pretty good off road excursion
by a mini van. Car full of younger girls managed to run off the road, and
end up on top a big rock in the road ditch. The reason I know we just missed
it was because there was still dust in the air when we rolled by. No blood,
no bodies on the ground, and 3 of them walking around with cell phones, so
we kept on truckin'.
Ate in the worst McDonald's I've ever been in. North side of Cleveland, GA.
Major dirty, major fucked up help. My guess is Ronald isn't checking on
things like he used to. Made me remember why me and the clown parted
company.
We finally got on the right road into Dahlonega, and the right road out of
Dahlonega, headed for Blairsville as an alternative to Blue Ridge. Big art
festival in Blue Ridge, no rooms at the inn, so we did that Plan B thing.
Now the road started getting interesting.
Now we come to the 108 mph, uphill, fully loaded, in the rain part.
It was uphill, fully loaded, at about 60 mph, in the dry, on a sweeper
curve, 3 lanes narrowing to 2, just as I made the transition to the 2 lane.
when I spotted a broken sack of "Sackrete" in the road, in my lane, and I
really figured it was gonna be ugly. Luckily, I managed to "push left, pull
right", and miss the mess by a few inches. If I'd tried to lean and miss, I'd
have hit it dead on and went down for sure. Luckily, everybody else was far
enough back that they saw the predicament I was in, and slowed down and made
a safe passage. At the top of the hill, a pickup truck and trailer, with t3
slack jawed locals were trying to rearrange the load of Sackrete that had
shifted, and dumped the one that I nearly tangled with. I had a few choice
words for their loading skills, and a 1 fingered salute for them as I went
by. Luckily, I had a sheepskin seat cover, which was a lot easier to dig out
of my ass that the Mustang Regal touring seat would have been. But, there
weren't any racing stripes in my shorts. My good friend Lee Fisk would have
been proud.
Lots of crotch rockets, and dual sport machines in the that part of GA, lots
of brake dust smells, lots of power ranger suits, and switchbacks,
decreasing radius turns, and sweet air as we went up the hill, and down into
Blairsville. Found a Best Western, the closest beer stop was 15 miles, but
there was a dandy restaurant just across the parking lot, so cold beer, good
companions, prime rib, home made carrot cake and mountain air made for a
pleasant evening. I slept like a baby. Stay tuned.

Nice to be reading a road story from you, Easy - seems like it's been a
long time between. Glad you still have the quick moves to get around
that concrete sack - kinda puckers up myself just reading it.

place to spend the night!

Unfortunately no...
I've got to be in Georgia for my niece's wedding on the 12th, and the family
thing is going on until the 14th/15th.
So, I figured I'd put together a South-East-Coast mini partay(tm) at the
Cabin in SC on the 19th.
http://ah104.com/2006SCUM/
It'll be for those that are Westerly Challenged, like me.
But, Washington is in my trip plans... wouldn't even think of going west
without seeing you & Jeannie.
We were gonna start out in June,,, that's been pushed to September,,, that's
been pushed to October.... so early October for Washington, and wander down
to SNIFF.

It's spelled Jeanne. Personally I think she should have it changed
since nobody seems to get it right.

Biketoberfest at the new Compound.....hint, hint.
I'm gonna try to make your east coast gig if I can get these
