OT - Maybe Not..... ramblings of a caffiene soaked mind [message #763622] Sun, 04 June 2006 17:34

If yer looking for talk about guns, politics, or porn....ya
may have to skip this one.

Getting geared up for a couple rides in the next few
weeks.....first is only a weekender (leaving next Friday)
with some camping. May run into some folks heading back to
the left coast from Roger's. I hear Steve Reyer is out there
somewhere.....will probably have a cold drink or three with
him next weekend standing around a fire barrel.... always
seem to find a spot with him and a cold drink around a nice
warm fire on a chilly evening.

Hoping to hook up with Tinman in the mountains just this
side of the NM border for the ride east.

Last year on this trip wife and I discovered what we thought
to be our best sleeping bags to have been ruined by the
kids. Zippers busted, nylon torn, etc. We tossed 'em in the
trash before we made the return trip. My "old" sleeping bags
are indeed that.......so a new one is in the outlook.

Didn't take our foam mats, with both of us going last year
space was an issue. This year I'm on my own, but I did the
foam mat thing over in Escondido recently and I'm gonna
venture out in the heat today (Phoenix, was 112
yesterday...more of the same today) to look for an air
mattress w/pump that won't require the entire trunk of a car
or a trailer to haul.

Having said that, our tent last year was sandwiched in
between RE's and Banker Bob/Julie's......we were drunk and
tired enough to still get a good night sleep despite of all
that....<sfsf>.

We'll try to manage our gas stops a bit better this year
too......didn't realize last year that some towns in NM only
had one gas station.....and the entire town closed at 5pm.
We even rolled into one town out in BFE last year lookin for
gas only to find no gas station in town. Town closeby had 86
octane only.....but as Lanter pointed out, I was riding a
rental..so why did I care...<sfsf>. No rental this year
though.........

In between swappin e-mails with Don Kent over on the coast
I killed a couple snakes out in my garage last night (I live
in the city for Christ sake)....look to be baby rattlers,
but are probably something harmless. My fireman/outdoorsman
buddy down the street will be home today.....so I'm taking
the little carcases down there for a verdict on what kinda
snakes they are.... still lookin for the rest of the family
and mama.

Needless to say, my wife refuses to go out into the garage
for anything........even wants me to back her car out. She
pretty much don't care if they were fuckin rubber
snakes.....she ain't goin out in the garage ever again (well
maybe one of these days).

First couple weeks in July I'll be doing a trip through
Colorado with my brother in law (and his wife) and another
couple (who live in Durango). Once again, my wife's staying
home, puppy sitting........hope she don't die of thirst
since the fridge in the GARAGE is full of water/beer/soda.

Since we're all old folks (or like to think we are), we'll
be doing the hotel/motel thing in Colorado. I'm gonna do
something different and toss my laptop into the tourpack so
I can keep up with the stuff here and to post some pics of
the ride across the street.

In true slug fashion, we've been trying to put this ride
together for the last five years.....thing always seems to
fall apart at the last minute. So far, we're a go this time.

Our last ride together as a group was a week through Arizona
back in November of 2000. (http://www.nite.com/thanks.html).

Having just re-read that account of our ride, I had to laugh
'cause I thought back then that riding 1100 miles in 5 days
was a LONG trip.......since then (on my Harley's instead of
my Honda Shadow 1100) I've been on rides that went that far
and usually more over a weekend....<sfsf>. That ride was fun
though since it was really the first time I went on a
multi-day ride.

This time it'll be a bit over 500 miles for me just to hook
up with the group to get the ride started.....and then the
same ride to get back home after the ride's over. Looks like
I'm the only out of stater NOT trailering my bike in for the
trip....<sfsf>.

After being here "home alone" for the last couple
weeks.....my Mrs. got home from the coast yesterday. She
spent the last couple weeks over there with our son and his
family greeting our newest grandson (#9 grandkid for us).
She left the L.A. area about 5am for the drive across the
desert to Phoenix, once she got home we went out for late
lunch (early dinner??) with her younger brother, his wife
and new baby (they were here from outa town).

She's been asleep now for about 12 hours.....I don't blame her.

I better go check the garage again for snakes before she
gets up.............

Just got both approvals, so I'll be going! Should be nice to get away
from this heat for a few days (currently 114, and it's not even noon
yet).

I did promise to bring a watermelon. This is turning into a trend...

You: "Watch This."
Me: "Want me to hold your beer??"
You: "I got it"

Hmmmm....wonder if I can get one that'll ride backseat with
me all the way over there. Was planning on sticking my
helmet on the back seat (so I've got it in case of rain,
yeah like that'll happen).

Bought me a real cool Trail-Lite self inflating air mattress
this morning over at Sportsman's Warehouse.

Was that flame job already on her bike at SNIFF last year? Please say
no <g>.

Say howdy to Scott for me. Oh yeah, if ya stop to eat in Show Low,
don't go where them guys are goin'... sucked when we were there last
time. Then again, them guys from Phoenix never have found a good
place to eat yet.
