After much fiddling, I finally got NASCAR1 and NASCAR2 working via VDMS,
NOLFB for the latter. Sound works, fps is very acceptable with maxed
graphics, and my black MOMO works. However, there is a hiccup: my MOMO
is spiking on all axis' (and somewhat in sync, it seems), enough to
cause the car to swerve unexpectedly towards the wall. Unfortunately,
there's no way to set a dead zone inside of VDMS or either titles.
Does anybody out there have any recommendations for settings in the VDMS
INI? Is there a sweet spot? In the joystick section I have:
[Joystick Controller]
CLSID = EmuJoystick.JoystickCtl
Path = EmuJoystick.dll
[Joystick Controller.depends]
VDMSrv = VDMServicesProvider
[Joystick Controller.config]
port = 0x201
minCoord = 100
maxCoord = 850
pollPeriod = 5150
mapFile = joy4.map
The default settings were absolutely crap, but these are somewhat decent
(on the crap scale). joy4 is simply a small edit of the other three map
files; this one just adds the proper axis' (XYZ) and two button support.
Or am I the only one in the who group who takes his classic gaming a
little too seriously? :)

I admire your zeal, but running dos programs with USB products with any
clever interface is still asking for trouble. Colored blocks were
acceptable 8 or 9 years ago..they don't hold much alure now-days.
Good luck figuring it out...have fun...thats the key.

VDMS? NOLFB? I have tried to make NASCAR2 work using dosbox and no luck
there. They don't seem to work very well on modern operating systems.

hmm, so much for liking older games. Well some of us do, and will try
to get them to work in xp. I did vdms for n1, and still am probably the
olny one who makes carsets and tracks for it.

I can provide you with a run down of what I did to make it work. I tried
using Dosbox to get NASCAR2 running, and while it did...it was super
slow...as was the first game.
Here's what I did:
1) Install VDMS. You can get it at: http://sourceforge.net/projects/vdmsound
2) Manually install NASCAR2 via the 'dosdrv' command.
3) Take note of the sound emulation settings in the VDMS ini, and use
these in the NASCAR2 setup program (once again, manually using dosdrv).
4) Download NOLFB and install to your NASCAR2 folder. You can get NOLFB
from: http://advsys.net/ken/build.htm
5) Run NOLFB.com via dosdrv.
5) Finally, run NASCAR2 via 'dosdrv'!
I use a batch file to avoid all of that typing, and here's what mine
looks like:
dosdrv
f:
cd nascar2
nolfb
nascar2
This baby works like a charm on my system.
Hope you find this helpful!

Yeah, I've even been tempted to use an old gameport joystick (which is
how I always played NASCAR2).
IMO, colored blocks are still acceptable to this day. Granted, the
physics are arcade compared to todays offerings, I still get a certain
enjoyment out of nostalgia..........and mid-race saves. :)
Amazing how our memories look back and think those old games were as
real as it gets. Though, I will say that my heart skipped a beat when I
saw that #3 GM Chevy in front of me again. It brought back a lot of
memories when him (AI) and I used to trade paint and win races together.

Thanks, and that's all I'm doing, which is trying to enjoy older products.
-Will, still a proud owner of his NASCAR2 CD, jewel case and the "oh so
cool" manual that came with this baby. Remember that manual? I /still/
bring it with me on bathroom trips from time to time. :)

DosBox will run slow with gameport joysticks whereas USB ones work
fine.
Also make sure that you use an CVS build of DosBox instead of DosBox
0.63 (DosBox 0.63 is ancient), there's been alot of fixes and speed
improvements to DosBox since then.

Thanks! Old games are not always the best, but some of them are great
fun.
I'll follow your instructions and see if I can try this oldie.

I also have the complete Papyrus NASCAR series...as well as their IndyCar
Racing series.
I'm keeping them for my grandson (3 years old) so that one day he'll be able
to show his mates what his Grandpa played on his PC ("On his _what_?!" "On
his PC...it was a type of computer so big people had them sitting on a
desk!".)
Fun days, indeed, and great memories.
