Heh. Having read about this in the week, I knew what the story would
be before I clicked on the link.
ObHayabusa: Jared Frost is attempting to build a street legal bike
that will do genuine 250mph, based on a Hayabusa. Reckons he needs
700bhp (apparently 600+bhp 'busas have already been built).
Apparently the capacity will stay the same, but a *VERY* large turbo
is being fitted.
Hubba hubba hubba.

Yeah, but fair play, it did it on 40-year old technology.

180 = k * 200^3
k = 180 / 200^3
P = (180 / 200^3) * 250^3
P = 351
So you'd expect 350 or so bhp to be enough.
I had a quick scout round the internet, and it seems that a chap called
John Noonan has a turbocharged Hyabusa that's done 250mph. The bike was
also the HP record holder in some class or other, and has been measured
at 545bhp. Apparently he had the boost turned down to "under 400" for
the record attempt.

Yes it is a VERY large turbo !! Frosty gave me the full tour last week and
also ran his current busa record bike up, very quite considering. He also
does unbelievable things with busa engined kit cars and elise's. Talks about
16 custom injectors not delivering enough fuel. Fantastic workshop and dyno
setup. If you ever need a run doing with or without adjustments it is well
worth a visit up to Bradford.

It's not in a vacuum, you know. Air is rather dense and bikes are not
the most aerodynamic shape to force through it.

I was chatting to the guy who runs 200mph.org and he said that wind
tunnel tests had shown the K1/K2 Gixer Thou to be aerodynamically
unsuitable for speeds above 195mph, even if the engine could get it
there. The Hyabusa is good for approx 280mph according to the man who
knows these things.

I'm not that surprised, really. All of the over-300mph bikes seem to be
streamliners with respectable, rather than huge power. You'd have
thought that sombody was bound to have had a go with a standard-ish
bike by now if it was as simple as bunging a big turbo on.
All the effort that guy went to, to get to 250-odd,on his big bore
turbo 'busa, when he's got an engine that will put out 150bhp more than
he was using... sounds like power isn't the limiting factor.

Precisely. His reckoning was that even 200bhp from a Gixer motor
wouldn't make it go much faster than it already does at the top end, the
limiting factor is the lack of aerodynamic sophistication.
Personally, I haven't a clue if this is correct, I'm just passing on
what I was told.
