Ride Invite - Northern, NJ (Sat. Nov. 26) [message #519856] Mon, 21 November 2005 03:31

Northern, NJ Ride Saturday Nov. 26

I am organizing an informal and leisurely ride around the Northern, NJ area
this Saturday, November 26. I will be departing from the CVS on Route 23 in
Cedar Grove (across the street from Dunkin Donuts at mile marker 1.5) at
11:00 AM. We will go from Cedar Grove into and around Somerset county and
wind up back in Cedar Grove around 3 PM. I hope to hit a few areas of
interest including the Great Swamp refuge area and the NYC overviews of
Johnson Drive in Watchung and Washington Rock. Lunch will be at a location
somewhere along the route and probably a random sandwich shop or
variety-type fast food joint. Nothing fancy or expensive. Maybe even White
Castle if all agree that they can handle it prior to departure. <grin>

I was brought up in Somerset county so I guarantee that I will hit some
smaller roads that most would never find on their own. It won't be a race
and there will not be a set route. I'll let the size of the group and the
day's weather dictate where we wind up going. One thing is certain. It
will be a relaxed ride.

If the weather is not cooperative (rain or... well... the evil white
stuff) then I'll send out an e-mail message that morning canceling the ride.
You can also call me at 862-703-9962 and I'll give you a status report or
directions to the CVS in Cedar Grove launch site.

All are welcome to ride with us regardless of whether they want to
participate in the event later that evening. Donations towards the
fundraiser are not expected, but will be accepted during the ride. As many
of you know, a riding buddy of mine, and more importantly, a friend of mine
was involved in a motorcycle accident back in May while riding down in VA on
his Vulcan. He is finally at home as of last weekend but is dealing with
some serious challenges - he is basically paralyzed from the neck down with
limited control of his arms only. This Saturday, a good number of us (250+)
are gathering for a fundraiser dinner event to help pay for modifications to
his home, vehicles, etc. If you want to attend, you need to RSVP NOW. I
think the deadline for last minute reservations is just about here... Call
Tim Smith at 973-857-5072 ASAP and tell him Joe Agro sent you. If you don't
call right now, you may not be able to attend. In fact, the deadline may
have already passed at this point for RSVPs. Anyhow... Tim Smith will have
the definite answer on that one.

I will be collecting donations from anyone who wants to give during the
ride. For those of you who want to ride and attend the evening's event,
e-mail me direct. For those of you who cannot attend and/or cannot ride
with us but would like to make a donation, you can mail it (payable to
"Employee Relief Furtenbacher Fund") to me. Just e-mail me and I'll give
you my address, etc.

I will hand deliver whatever donations are made to the organizers on behalf
of those riders who want to support the Furtenbacher family but cannot
attend in person.

The dinner will take place at the Il Tulipano (http://www.tulipano.com/)
located at 1131 Pompton Avenue in Cedar Grove, NJ (07009). Proceeds will be
forwarded to the "Employee Relief Furtenbacher Fund." Tim can give you full
details should you have any questions.

Again, you are all welcome to join us for the ride even if you don't want to
donate even a single penny. These are two separate events. I am personally
tying them together to facilitate support for Steve and his family.

I promise to avoid highways, 18 wheelers and random and extended meetings
with strangers.

Hope to see you Saturday!

Regards,
Joe Agro

How is it that you start out organizing and informal and leisurely ride that
ends up as a charity fundraiser? I'm sure you have no idea how dumb your
post is. Skip the bullshit and get directly to the point. You're trying to
raise money for your friend.

Don't be an idiot Schmoe... Read the entire post next time or work on your
short term memory... I'll quote myself because context is everything:

"All are welcome to ride with us regardless of whether they want to
participate in the event later that evening. Donations towards the
fundraiser are not expected, but will be accepted during the ride."

and...

"Again, you are all welcome to join us for the ride even if you don't want
to donate even a single penny. These are two separate events. I am
personally tying them together to facilitate support for Steve and his
family."

Yes, I totally and whole heartedly admit to tying the two together on the
same day to make it easier for anyone who WANTS to participate in the event
or who simply would choose to donate... But the ride is a totally separate
event and nowhere in my post to I make any reference to their being an
expectation or pressure to do anything more than ride. It's not called the
"Steve's Benefit Ride" or the "Put pressure on some schmoe to donate ride."
It's called a leisurely "Enjoy Life" ride and I happen to be making myself
available for another purpose on that day.

DISCLAIMER: Let me make it even easier for you to understand... Nobody
from here is allowed to give me any money during the ride. Period. Come
and ride. If you hand me money for Steve and I find out you are from this
group, I'll throw it back at you. You are all forced to mail in anything
you might have wished to donate. And... I'd appreciate it if you contacted
Tim Smith and mailed it to him directly. I apparently cannot be involved in
any way, shape or form if it involves riding.

Does that make the random schmoe happy?

I'm sorry to all the other folks out there... It royally pisses me off when
people would actually pick a fight over something as simple as this. Come
and ride. Just don't offend Schmoe by doing things the easy and convenient
way.

You havn't offended me or likely anyone else. The indirect bullshit is a
mere annoyance that garnered my response. You simply don't get it. If you
want to promote the charity ride (informal and leisurely though it may be),
be direct, tell your fucking story and ask people if they want to help.
Don't be a fucking spider drawing people into your lair of an ride which is
followed by a fundraiser. Re-read your OP. It reads like you are begging for
strangers to ride with hoping that some will come the fundraiser to follow.

Ya just don't get it. Yet I keep throwing ya peanuts. <nodding head>

That is a good start. I don't like offending people. I actually felt kind
of guilty for responding so harshly and direct. It's not my style. But my
life revolves around people. Riding, eating, living... All come second to
being there for others when I can and when I feel it is the right thing to
do. So I guess I was the one offended. Please forgive me for lashing out
with the response I sent.

But... I still won't receive a single penny from anyone this Saturday.
Come and RIDE!

Well, that problem is solved since it now has nothing to do with the event,
right?

I think I got it and dealt with it. Total separation of the two for folks
in this forum.

Now. Lets see if anyone actually shows up to ride. Bring peanuts if you
want. I like peanuts.

If you want people to ride with, offer people to meet you for a ride. If you
made a SHORT mention of a charity ride after that you were going to, it
might not seem to obvious.

Now, open your mouth, I'm chucking peanuts.
