Rented a trailer and bought a cardboard box for the uninstalled bits
and hauled my 78 to Full Throttle for the broken tappet repair. Talked
with Jett for awhile about my misfortune and he was truly sorry to see
the carnage. He printed out the sevrice invoice from the rebuild and
marveled at how long it took to finish printing. I think it was 5
pages of parts and labor charges. Anyway as he perused the list to
refamiliarize himself with the job he tapped in the part number on the
tappets and said "You know, right after your build I quit using those
tappets on account of having one fail not long after a rebuild." He
mentioned he didn't have an easy way to track the other jobs he did
using those tappets, as though he would have tried to do a recall or
something. Anyway I was satisfied with the job he did and confirmed in
my mind it was wholly the tappets failure. He talked me out of the
valve spring change saying that's the way S&S shipped the heads. He
will double check spring force before buttoning it up but will not
change them unless thay are way too strong. So it looks like so far he
is going to inspect the oil pump, clean out the tank and lines,
replace what's bad and replace the tappets with Jims and the cam with
a Crane 300H.

Two notes. One is that just because the heads came with those spring does not make
them correct for your application. Two is, it's your money, how long did you say
the original bill was?

Good points Roger. The original bill was 5 pages of computer paper
parts and labor entries. Although he seemed to think the springs were
ok I did ask him to check the pressure to be sure it was ok with the
new cam.
