Hi folks,
I have a 2005 Dyna Super Glide Custom with 1050 miles. I live
in Connecticut where the riding season is rapidly coming to an end. Question
is: is it better to have the 1000 mile check up done now and let it sit for
the winter all ready to go or let it sit for the winter and have it done
fresh for the spring?
Of course the dealer's say do it now. Interestingly, HD customer
service said to wait
and do it in the spring.
I'd like to hear from experienced Harley riders. There is a decent
discount for doing it in November. Maybe that should be my guide.
Please advise..

I agree with the other posts that say to do it now. Used oils can have acids
in them that will attack the internals if left for long periods without
starting. It's almost a rule written in stone to change fluids before
storing for extended periods.

Thank you very much to all that replied:
I felt that way about the oil sitting in there all winter too. I don't
know why the Harley customer service person said to wait.
But consider it done. I think it'll be about $300 bucks. I found an
awesome place/person to do it. So that's, that.
I've got the service manual on order and I bought a mc jack tonight. So,
oil changes next. Then who knows.... vbg thanks again..

I think you'll find the bike jack will not work on the Dyna's
There is a gusset along the bottom of the frame that make it unbalanced
to jack up It protects the oil pan. Unless you have the jack with the arm
kit.
I agree with the rest, do the service now, don't let the junk oil set all
winter.

Balls! Hey Steve tell me more about the Dyna and mc jacks..
It appears to have two flat plates with hard rubber as lifting surfaces.
It the Craftsman mc jack.

I had have a 2004 Road Kink and the jack works on it fine. But on my new
Dyna StreetBob 2006
It does not work. I also Have the Craftsman Jack.
If you look at the underside of the bike on the brake side ( Right Side ) of
the bike your see a gusset
on the underside of the frame and it's only on one side. It protects the oil
pan i guess.
So when you jack it up it starts to lean over to the left side. No good.
They do make a mc jack that has extensions on them but that jack is a lot
more than the
Craftsman.

So, raise th' left side by adding th' appropriate amount of material
on th' lift... like a piece of plywood cut to fit. Ain't rocket

Yes it is because the jack don't fit under mine at all.
Plywood or not it don't fit. But you must have some more input
that you know nothing about. But hay you must be that rocket scientist.
But in full upright , that jack don't fit under it.
Any more all knowing input.

I'm not Snarl, but I can quote him...
"ya gotta be smarter'n th' problem"
Lay a couple of boards down in front of the wheels. Roll the bike up on 'em.
Roll the jack up under the bike. Add plywood to make the jack fit the frame.
Heek's the rocket scientist, not Snarl.
That'll be $16 and 4 ice cold Coors.

>Yes it is because the jack don't fit under mine at all.
What we have here is a failure to communicate. Just another problem
we gotta be smarter than. So you say yer jack doesn't fit under yer
new Dyna at all, right? Could've sworn that above ya said "So when
you jack it up it starts to lean over to the left side. No good." So
does th' jack fit under th' bike or not? And yes, I realize that th'
right side of th' frame is lower than th' left.
>Plywood or not it don't fit. But you must have some more input
>that you know nothing about. But hay you must be that rocket scientist.
That's rocket surgery man.
>But in full upright ,
What's in full upright, th' jack or th' bike?
>that jack don't fit under it.
Then how does it make th' bike lean to th' left if th' jack won't fit
under it?
>Any more all knowing input.
Yeah, that is if I can make any sense out of what yer tryin' to say.
If th' jack is too tall (all th' way collapsed) to fit under th' frame
ya just raise th' frame. Roll th' wheels onto some 2x whatevers to
getcher clearance. My bagger has to go on some 6"x6"s to allow enough
clearance for th' frame to clear th' lift. Piece O' cake. Takes alla
two minutes to do.
I also put bikes on this lift that have uneven shit underneath onna
frame that causes it to lift all cattywampus, sideways like. I just
add wood shim stock as needed and bingo, end of problem. Prolly have
10-15 different pieces of shim stock just for this reason. Again, two
minutes and she's up inna air man. End of problem.

How much higher does it need to be? If you were smarter than than the
problem, you'd figure out to roll the bike up onto something (oh, say a piece
of plywood or a 2X4) of the necessary thickness to get the jack under it.

So we got some douch bag who's been around long enough
to know all about his '04 RoadKink, and now is an expert on the
06 StreetBob, so he can know much more than Snarl?
Fuck being smarter than the problem. This guy would do his

Again, thanks for most of the replies. I'm not really interested in some
of your verbal spats though.
I have the bike back home and the jack. Sliding the jack in from the
exhaust side works if another person holds the bike upright.
then a piece of wood 1 x something works on the front pad (all the way
acrosss the hack pad) then a short piece of wood slid in from the other
side up to the gusset.
It jacked up pretty good. However the gusset holds some weight but the
oil pan seems to hold some too. I think it will be better to make a
custom piece that fits on the jack pad that will take up the space under
the left frame member so the weight will be on that and not the oil pan.
Should I be concerned about the oil pan holding some of the weight of
the bike?

I don't mind helping someone willing to learn. Hopefully my neighbor will

Cool beans. That's (welding) an art I've never learned to master,
mostly since th opportunity hasn't arisen. Th' more I learn about it,
th' more I'm convincin' m'self that I'm better off for it <g>. When
somethin' comes up that requires welding, gotta neighbor bud who's all

Seriously tho, that can be some dirty assed work, especially inna shop

Yeah, some really need to pay the stealer or an indie to handle repairs, no
matter if it's cars or bikes. I'd much rather spend my money on tools to do
the work myself. Only things I won't do is machinework. I don't have the
equipment, or I'd learn that too.

Heh, you might be suprised. Think about a kid that's used to changing oil on
cars, and maybe jap bikes, where they use wet sump oiling. He drained a
little oil out of the primary, thinking that was for the engine. Never had
an idea that the frame is the oil tank on this bike. He'll learn, if he has
patience and is willing...

My shop's a mess anyway. I grew up around welding on a farm, but never tried
it until I got a maintenance job where I needed to learn. I knew enough that
I picked it up easily. I'm no expert, but I do know enough to get by. Worked
as a Certified Welding Inspector for a few years, still with the same
company as now, but pushing papers now. Welding/fabricating is relaxing for
me.

You're right, the 2 don't mix well. I'd love to have a big-assed shop with
work bays in the center, welding shop on one end, and machine shop on the
other end. I'd need more property than I have now though...

I'll give it to him next time he comes by. Only problem is the Haynes manual
has some flaws. I haven't paid much attention to the section covering the
newer models like his, maybe the info is correct there. Haynes shows to add
x amount of oil to the primary on the 650 models. It fails to mention that
they made changes in '70 and the engine & primary share oil. Filling the
primary per the Haynes manual results in over-filling & blowing oil
everywhere.

When I bought my 9 acres, 9 years ago, the guy gave me an option on an
additional 30 that was part of the same piece. I thought, "WTF would I
do with 40 acres of woods."
Well, now the neighbor lady has bought it back from him(another long

road from me.

In that case, show yer cards and throw th' deed onna table... cause
I'll be takin' them thar boondocks.
When I bought this place th' main reason was that nobody could ever
(in my lifetime anyway) build anywhere near us. Literally have 150
acres of commercial forest land on two sides. Th' topography onna
other two won't allow for suitable building sites anywhere near my
property lines... read big assed, 70+ ft deep gullies.
And Manke, th' timber company who owns th' 150, couldn't care less if
we go on their property to pick huckleberries, blackberries,
mushrooms, hunt, take quiet, peaceful walks through th' deer trails,
or th' kids make forts n' whatever else kids do out inna woods. We've
been usin' like it's ours fer goin' on 16 years now.
Heh, it's so fuckin' quiet out here that it actually spooks city folks
sometimes. I can hear a car comin' from a mile away, and I'm damn
near deef. And if ya hear a siren out here, ya best go see who needs
help!

1) Purchase one gallon of high grade gasoline
2) Purchase and wear some very highly absorbent plastic clothing
3) Purchase a Bic Lighter or a box of "strike anywhere" matches.
4) After putting said absorbent clothing on your body, drench yourself
with the above mentioned gasoline as said above, and sit on your nearest
Court House steps.
5) Light match/lighter.
