Gear shifter sticks when upshifting [message #517213] Tue, 15 November 2005 21:45

Bike is a 1984 Kawsaki KZ700s. The bike shifts alright but when
upshifting (pushing down on the shifter) it will stick and need to be
lifted up before i can shift again. What can cause this, and is there an
easy fix? It doesn't have a problem downshifting.

The return spring is broken on the gear change mechanism. I'm not
sure if you can replace this without going inside the engine cases.
Take a look in your shop manual. You can look at the parts involved on
http://www.buykawasaki.com on the 'GEAR CHANGE MECHANISM' fiche page,
but it doesn't help too much as you need to know how to get at them,
hopefully it's accessible by nothing more involved than removing the sump.

I've looked at my Kawasaki KZ750/KZ700 manual and indeed it appears
that you can remove and replace the shift arm return spring without
removing the sump as the mechanism is external (although it resides
behind a cover that needs removing). You may even find that the spring
is intact and the problem is the 'external shift mechanism return spring
bolt' is loose- it's mentioned in the manual as something that needs to
be checked, apparently it was discovered to be a recurring failure mode.

92081B is the return spring.
92001A is the external shift mechanism return spring bolt that the return
spring works against.
