Just another quick post to thank everyone again for their help. I
visited my local Mazda dealership today and had the light checked out.
Indeed, it is the catalytic converter. You guys just saved me
$1500!!!!
The warranty will cover the replacement! They didn't ask any
questions about how it might have gone -- just said warranty would
cover it (course they already knew that I knew about the possibility
of it being covered if it WAS the cat.

This may not apply at all since my experience is with a Subaru. But like
I said in the previous thread, I recently had the cat on my Subaru
replaced under warranty. Shortly after the work was done, I had an
exhaust leak in the front of the car. I took it back to the dealership
that did the work and they said, "It's the front Y-pipe and not related
to the previous job," in other words, "not their problem." They said
it'd be a few $100 to fix. I took it to my mechanic and he said that it
was NOT the front Y-pipe, but the gaskets on the end of the Y-pipe. He
said that to replace the cat, you MUST remove the Y-pipe. And that it
only makes sense to replace the $5 gaskets when you do. Since they
didn't (my mechanic showed me the gaskets that were on there.. obviously
OLD), I had to have my mechanic fix their stupid "short-cut".
Point is, if the setup on the Miata is similar (anyone know?), make sure
that they do the job right and if you have to pay a few bucks for some
gaskets that may not fit into the warranty, it's a lot better than having
to go back and pay labor and parts for their stupidity to be fixed.

I think sometimes it pays to just take your car to a Mazda dealer
instead of relying on a general mechanic. I can see using the mechanic
for routine maintenance; tires, oil, shocks maybe, but when it come to
major troubleshooting and repairs, I think the dealer is better
equipped to deal with the problem. They also know all of the recalls
and warranty issues for the Mazda that a mechanic would not neccesarily
be aware of and it could save you money as Carol found out.

In this area, the Mazda dealer is the last resort for anything, including
parts.
Mechanics seldom have read the TSB's. The turnover in the dealer's shop is
high.
The area zone office is known to scrimp on warrenty repair authorizations.
