Air flow not switchable by control knob [message #514666] Mon, 14 November 2005 13:05

I have a 99 Explorer and noticed one day when attempting to use the A/C that
the air flow was minimum at full thrust. I took it to a mechanic but he
wasn't able to locate the problem. He said he took some of the dashboard
apart but didn't detect cause. The last thing he mentioned was a pin had
disconnected from a flap that switches air direction. Anyone have any ideas?

You may have come down with the dreaded "blend door disease"

Yeah, I've seen that info somewhere, but just looked and couldn't find
it. The problem was with the air conditioning on, cold air was wasted
by blowing it on the floor, i.e. the heater door was open.

Try moving the knob from one end of it's range to the other. One
problem was not being able to move one position at a time due to
friction in a cable, but it would work with a "running start" by moving
the knob thru a longer range. The fix involved removing the glove box,
putting the control to one extreme, and adjusting the position of the
actuating cable by reaching in thru the glove box hole.

I just saw mention of a vacuum operated switch too, problem being a
vacuum hose coming off under the hood.

Could be some years used a cable, others vacuum.

Maybe someone more knowledgeable will jump in here...
