I am looking for a source and name for the socket needed to pull the brake
caliper on an 02 Softail. It is the torx looking bolts. The pattern is
throwing me, is it really torx?
Thanks

No , it's really just a 12 point bolt head . A standard 12 point socket will
fit .

Like Snag and Karl sez it's a common 12 point
socket, 1/4" to be exact. The socket can be hard
to locate. (Craftsman has them, I scored one after
changing my pads) O'Riley has a 1/4" combination
wrench with a 12 point end. It's slow but it does
work, especially on Saturday afternoon in a small
town (no resources). About 2 bucks.

It is not a torx. A Snap-on 12 point 1/4" x 3/8" drive, part # F081 is
what I use. Other tool suppliers carry similar sockets, but I have no
idea of their cost or part #'s.

Ya know, I re-read your post. If you're changing pads
the info you have received is correct. But you said
you're wanting to pull the caliper. Still 12 point stuff
but larger than the 1/4. If you're installing pads I don't
think it's necessary to pull the caliper, I know it's not on
my '01 bagger, not sure on your softie. Just pull the
pad pins and use a putty knife to pry back the pistons.
Instructions were included in the box for my genuine
HD replacement pads.
Who needs brakes anyhow, they just slow you down.

Like Frito said, ya don't need to pull the caliper to change the pads,
unless you like the chance of rounding off the corners of the bolt
head. 12 sided sockets are great if you are working on aircraft or
equipment that has low torqued hardware. Ya could, when and if you get
it apart, just replace it with a six sided bolt. They are much easier
to remove after being corroded or what ever.

The pad pins are "low torque".

The OEM bolt has a swelled-end that locks into the caliper and keeps
the pads in their respective position. I don't recommend replacing it
with a standard bolt.

I used a 1/4 inch 12 point combo wrench this weekend on my bagger and the
bolts holding the caliper on are 10mm 12 point. The service manual doesn't
state what size they are but the instructions that came with the pads
does.
