Shovel help update [message #504523] Mon, 07 November 2005 01:24
Harold Gailey
Took the front head off today and pulled the rocker cover. Haven't
been able to find my big C clamp to compress the springs so I haven't
gotten them apart yet. It appears there are 3 springs for each valve,
a big fattie on the outside, and progressively smaller ones on the
inside. The springs are so crowded it's hard to determine if any are
broken. Everything looked real good in the cylinder and the head. No
evidence of contact between valve and piston. While the head was off I
slowly kicked the motor over to see if the sound was still there. It
was not so my guess that it was in the front head seems correct. I
will be checkin the local dealers and parts houses tomorrow for spring
compressors and head bolt breaker bars. I see them online but I don't
want to wait for shipping. It was a bear getting the head bolts with
the tools I have so before reassembly I am going to get the bar. As
for the spring compressor I can probably get them apart with my big c
clamp but getting them back together might be a little tougher. Thanks
for all the help and encouragement. The head removal went relatively
smoothly and I noticed the intake manifold was not all that snug when
I removed it. I'll be putting some pictures up at abpmh when I get the
springs apart.
