How to remove seat FXST [message #504494] Sun, 06 November 2005 13:33
Eric J Cartman
Hi,

I am trying to figure out how to remove the seat from a 2005 FXST
Softtail standard. I see the screw at the back of the seat but there
is a leather strap that goes around the seat and is attached to the
fender and it's not clear on how to loosen the nut that holds that
strap down.

ANy help will be greatly appreciated!

Most Service Manuals have that information along with a wealth of
other stuff.

Follow that strap over the top of the seat. On the left side of my bike the
metal clip is cut to allow you to pull down until it slides over the bolt
head. Also be careful about how the seat moves around while your messing
with it. The bolt on the rear of the seat doesn't come out and once its is
unscrewed it will scratch your nice shiny new fender unless you put
something over it while you figure out how to get that strap undone.. Ask
me how I figured that out.. And the manual doesn't really tell you any of
this because I read that section about three times trying to find out
everything I had to do to get the fender off. It was written for somebody
who has worked on bikes before.. My only question is if he can't figure out
how to remove that strap should he even try.. It's harder to get back on
right then it was to take it off.. and I make no claim to being a mechanic,
would like to learn but don't know anybody who can work on bikes other then
the shop where I take mine when it needs some real work done on it.
It also helps to have the parts manual which shows how it all goes togather
and lists the part numbers you need to ask for when you show up at the
counter.. over worked counter folks are much friendlier if they don't have
to look up those parts and guess which one of the three parts listed is the
one you need.

Strap? What the hell you need a strap for? Yank that sucker off and put bungee
hooks in it's place.

Leave the strap in place.......

On my Deuce, I always undid the nut at the rear of the seat (wiggled it
around to get it outa the backrest), slid the seat rearward to unhook it
from it's mount under the fuel tank.....then slid it kinda forward and
to the side.....outa the strap. Always just left the strap alone. I
removed the seat on a regular basis......installing/removing my
saddlebags.....

Many places require the strap to be there if you are carrying a
passenger....whether it's used or not.

Greasy was right, of course........if you're going to be doing ANYTHING
with that bike......you need to invest the $60 in the factory service
manual from Harley. It contains easy to read, step by step instructions
on how to do EVERYTHING (for the bike that is).

Because in some states, if there's a passenger pillion, there has to be a
permanent strap for said passenger.

Arizona

Document is the Arizona Motorcycle Operator's Manual and states that
"seat, footrests, and handrails are required for a passenger".

The seat grabstrap is the only "handrail" available on many bikes....and
in Arizona is considered a "handrail".

I would assume other states have similar rules/regulations.

Wow. That's wild... I'll consider myself educated. So I guess the Sporty
that I sold to my brother, with a Corbin Gunfighter and Lady saddle, and a
tall backrest, would have been illegal for passengers.

Unless you consider the backrest uprights "handrails"?

Which like many other customs would be subject to change as conditions
evolve and change???

Reminds me of a sign I saw inside a fire station (typical of real life)
in the movie "Backdraft":

"The Chicago Fire Department, 150 years of tradition unimpeded by progress".

Why does "usenet etiquette" suggest that in messages carrying a sig,
that sig should be no more than 4 lines????

Does it go back to times when data transport speeds crawled compared to
what we have today, or when data storage was a fraction of what it is today.

Kinda like Key resizing pictures so that "folks with dialup can see them
too".......which I find kinda funny, since even at 300 baud, if I wanted
to see the pics.....I would spend the time to do that. And if my time
wasn't worth the wait, I'd either upgrade service, buy faster equipment,
or forget it all together........

<sidenote> my ISP (Qwest) does such a pisspoor job with it's servers
that I see little if any of the pics in ABPMH </sidenote>

I don't want to get into a pissing match with ya, don't know you....but
people I know, know you.........but I'm kinda wondering what your
motivation is to be the sig cop, the manual cop, the lazy cop, and
whatever else it is you're into lately. Every bit of which adds to the
bandwidth you act like you're protecting......

I guess what I mean is.....why do you fucking care if someone has a 5
line sig?? What is your stake in pointing it out to everyone??

I just don't get it.....which you will probably make fun of me about,
but...oh well I guess.

I didn't question your "right" to anything. I could give a shit that you
want to post your opinion about something.....I do it frequently.

But you seem to be posting this "sig too long" opinion multiple times
each day recently. Which isn't an opinion, it's an attempt to control or
direct behavior.

I guess my question stands, what's your motivation, your stake in
pointing out every use of a sigline (or whatever)??

I looked it up, how about this:

your signatures concise, as people do not appreciate seeing lengthy
signatures, nor paying the phone bills to repeatedly transmit them. 2
or 3 lines are usually plenty. Sometimes it is also appropriate to
add another line or two for addresses on other major networks where
you can be reached (e.g., CompuServ, Bitnet). Long signatures are
definitely frowned upon. DO NOT include drawings, pictures, maps, or
other graphics in your signature -- it is not the appropriate place
for such material and is viewed as rude by other readers."

From: http://www.faqs.org/faqs/usenet/posting-rules/part1/

Guess it would be a problem if you're paying per minute charges for
internet access and were running 300 baud........

Finally someone took the initiative to not be spoon fed by the masses!
There are a few who are still paying by the minute...

Oh, wait... did I say a few?
How about most of Europe?
I can see changing something that's old and outdated... this isn't.
Multiply it by the number of posts, by the number of newgroups, yadda,
yadda, yadda.

It's just rude.
Simple.

As is not snipping... posting in all caps, etc...

And I really don't care what people do in newgroups (after all Panhead is my
friend)... I just like to voice my opinion and since I voiced it about this,
a lot of people have seen to it to make it perpetuate throughout this, and
other newsgroups.

It wasn't easy, most hits on usenet etiquette came back 404 (mainly
because they were sooooo old and outdated......)

Is "most of Europe" on this newsgroup????? I think if I was a European,
on a European newsgroup conversing in a European language and paying a
European rate structure......I would be concerned.

I guess it's all about me isn't it??

I can see retaining those guidelines in newsgroups routinely used in
places still using a 20th Century <sfsf> model for telecommunications.

I guess my opinion would be that it doesn't make sense to make and
enforce blanket guidelines everywhere, but only where those guidelines
seem appropriate.

So...yer tossing a little red ball because someone dared to disagree

Back in those days, you'd never see pics, or much of anything else,
th' size of some of th' pics posted now. It'd take all fuckin' day
long to download.

Usually door number three since one isn't possible and two is already
*way* under utilized.

Think of it like this; *if* yer havin' a problem like an expensive
engine noise and ya can't figure out WTF it might be, and *if* ya
decide to post some pics in th' search for knowledge, and *if* ya
decide to post some humongous pics, fuck th' dial-up guys, just who
gets fucked again?

Ain't no sweat off us slow speed dial-up guys balls. Chances are
pretty good that th' poster of said pics just fucked hisself out of a
huge audience that could assist <shrug>.
