Shovel help [message #504475] Sat, 05 November 2005 19:03
Harold Gailey
My shovelhead started making a scary sound on the ride home from work
last night. It started while I was traveling about 70 when the motor
started missing and backfiring. It had gas so I suspected an ignition
problem. I slowed and rode the breakdown lane til it quit misfiring
and started running strong again, about a 1/4 mile. However it started
making a noise that sounded like metal on metal. I could feel the
vibration stongest in the air cleaner and it appears to be from the
front cylinder's top end. I have recorded the sound it makes while
kicking it over with the plugs out and attached the sound file to a
similar message at abpmh. I checked each pushrod after removing the
covers and kicking it over and the pushrods felt fine. I felt the
ignition mudule while kicking and it felt fine. Anybody have an idea
what parts are making this sound? I rode it the rest of the way home
and it rode fine, just kept making the noise all the way home. As a
side note the bike has started flashing the oil pressure light when at
a slow idle, increase the rpm a little and it goes out. It has plenty
of clean oil and this may not be related to the sound but it could be
too. Thanks for any insight.

I heard the sound. Very hard to tell. I would check my valves. Maybe a
sticky valve? If it is, maybe your piston is making contact with the
valve(?).

Thanks for the diagnosis TK. I wonder if I can peek down the spark
plug hole and see evidence of that? I guess the valve stem gets most
if not all its lubrication from above. Maybe not enough oil is getting
to it or something.

It might work. On my old ironhead I could see the valves opening an
closing by peeking through the plug hole. And maybe you can find
some 'evidence' on top of the piston (I hope not!). Try also 'reading'
the plugs. If there is trouble in one of the jugs they definately should
look different.

When I pulled the plugs to record the sound they looked excellent.
Both had a slight tan coloration and were very clean. No oil or debris
of any kind on them. The bike still ran fine after the backfiring and
misfiring quit happening. I think whatever it is it isn't something
that prevents the motor from running right. Makes me think it's a
broken spring or something. I don't suppose the front rocker cover can
be removed with the head still on?

I'm not sure. It seems to me that there's enough room between head and
frametube(?). Hope someone in this group can acknowledge this. It worked
on my ironhead though(see pic in abpmh).

Well Harold it could be anything, but if I had to make a choice as to what
the noise is I'd say it's a broken valve spring.

You can pull the head with the motor in the frame, the rocker box will come
off after the head is removed.

Thanks. I figured I wouldn't get away without pulling the head. Oh
well, I guess if it's broken I probably can't hurt it too much trying
to fix it myself.

I'm kind of leaning that way and even hoping that's what it is. That
is probably something I can attempt to fix myself. I may need a valve
spring compressor but they probably aren't too pricey.

I love shovels, but aged motors are notorious for motor noise. (sewing
machines).
Describing a sound is as tough as describing how my ex sounded before she
said "I love you" haha
Anyway, it could be Piston/cylinder, Lifter/Lifter block, Rocker/Rocker
block or even your mains really. It`s really hard to tell without hearing.
But clean plugs are a sign of a good running motor, and depending on if you
are as anal as me, and it`s not knocking like hell, you can ride it until it
breaks, or tear it apart, find and fix it.
P.S. Anybody own an `06 Street Glide FLHX yet. I`m breaking down and buying
an EVO finally! Never thought I would.

Age has nothing to do with it. That's just how shovels are.

And you won't. That model has the TC motor.
And if you thought the shovels are noisy, boy are you in for a surprise.

America's funniest? We'll be the judges of that.

But hey! You might just be.

You going to play Bike Week? Might be a fun gig for a bunch of

Judge away. As long as the check clears at the end of the gig.

As far as Bike week goes... I'll be in Jacksonville, FL the week before
Daytona and we are in negotiations to do a club in Daytona Beach the week
of.

I'm also in negotiations with the Comedy Cabana in Myrtle Beach to perform
there during May 12-21 bike week.

Should be in Charlotte, NC for the Easyriders show, I believe in February.

Just did Las Vegas Bikefest at The Comedy Zone in Sept.

And we haven't heard from Sturgis.

Good attitude. Leave 'em laughing and leave town. I like it.

As luck would have it, some of us are in Jax. Where are you going to
be? Could be fun to have a SENS at the Comedy Club thing.

Thanks for the reply. Better late than never I guess. In case you
missed the rest of the thread it was a tappet that broke taking out
my cam and leaving lots of bits of metal in the gearcase. As an update
I picked up my shovel this morning and on the ride home it started
making some loud clatter. I turned around and headed back to the shop
and the clatter stopped about a mile later but continued with some
ticking. John suspected one of the hydraulic units was sticking but
double checked the pushrod adjustments while I waited and at startup
everything again sounded normal. About halfway home the second time
the ticking resumed so I called him and will drop it back off Tuesday
for at least one new hydraulic unit or maybe a set.

Cool. I'll try and make it.

You'll recognize me. I'll be the big bald guy sitting on the
front row with my arms crossed saying things like "That shit ain't
funny, man!"

No, seriously, Ms. Mouse and I will make every effort to be there.
We'll even bring our bull riding judging cards so you'll know how
you're doing.

Yeah, and I'd love to get my hands on one of those. A Knuckle would be my
preference, but a Pan would work just fine too.

I had exactly the same problem with an Ironhead sportster -- you have a
valve that's sticking. Replace or ream the valve guides and you should
be fine.

My problem turned out to be a tappet that broke. It was the front
cylinder intake and took out the cam too. The ride home from the shop
after the repair the bike started making noise again and I took it
back and the pushrods were rechecked. The next ride home was
uneventful except for a faint ticking that will be cured with new
hydraulic units as soon as they arrive.
