Mazda's 2+2 RX-8
The rotary engine disappeared from Mazda's lineup when the RX-7 was
retired in 1995, but is back -- more refined, more powerful and more
efficient than ever -- in the RX-8.

No complaints about the engine, but the rest of the car is
nasty ugly -- inside and out. :(

I have to disagree wih Grant on that one. I think there are a few cheeky
details on the inside but overall, I feel it's an awesome car serving a very
real niche. That's the niche of a guy (or girl) who wants a sports car but
also needs to carry the kids around on a regular basis. I say congrats to
Mazda for not being too shy on the styling, most everything else out there
is pretty much cookie-cutter predictable with little or no attempt to be
individualistic. I love it.

That's strange, I've seen hundreds in the UK, looks pretty popular to me
even at 18mpg.
I would also disagree that its much more efficient than ever as the RX-7 was
quoted at 17mpg and had more power albeit with turbos. Also it was only
retired in the US in 1995 due to emissions regulations and lack of sales but
continued in Japan until 2002. The redesign to the Renesis was more about
emissions than anything else.
Ultimately its the smoothness, delivery and handling that sells RX-7s and 8s
and most definitely not fuel economy.
