I have a 2005 Dyna Super Glide Custom and I'm a new Harley rider. I've been
riding a Kawasaki KZ-1000 for 20+ years.
The super glide does not have a tach and I can't seem to get a handle on the
cruising range and rpm etc.
Here's why: Apparently it has an rpm limiter on it and I've reached it going
through the gears a couple-three times but it sure doesn't feel like it's
wound up. Is the rpm limiter set low because the bike is new?
Also, it seems to feel really smooth at weird speeds. For example: A nice
cruising speed on the highway is 70mph. However, it is smooth as silk at 70
in fourth gear but I feel vibration in 5th gear at that speed.. I've got to
go quite a bit faster to have it smooth out again. Shouldn't it cruise
smoothly at a decent speed in 5th? What is the rpm of the super glide at 70
mph in 4th gear?
I'm about to have my 1000 mile check up. Do different bikes have different
resonant frequencies or something? Can the motor mounts be adjusted for
things like that?
The bike is really awesome! But different indeed. I'd appreciate input from
other super glide owners/riders.
I've been looking at the HD parts and accessory book. I can't seem to
determine if there is a nice clean looking tach setup that would match my
single instrument speedo setup.
Do many super glide riders add tachs? If so please advise.
Thanks in advance,
Tim fm CT

Look harder, it's there.

I added one before I broke the bike in.

Thanks for the reply roach. Yes, I saw that tach but when it said it
needed additional handlbar clamps I backed off. The clamp has all the
indicator lights in it etc soooo, $260+ bucks plus that clamp plus
what-ever I'll wait.
Maybe someone will provide a few rpms for a few key mph and gears.
Seeing that you have a tack can you do that?
4th gear 70mph.
5th gear 70mph.
Thanks,

The only one I'm sure of is 5th gear at 3000 rpms is
approx. 70mph.

Tim, I ride a 99 FXD (see my signature). Great bike. Same gearing
as yours. One of best investments I ever made was to add a tach, but
that is just my opinion. Yes the bike does have a rev. limiter. 5500
rpm is max unless upgrade to SE or aftermarket setup.
Regarding rpm at given speeds.
Use the following approximations:
Fifth little over 2 to one ratio. For a quick estimate divide speed by
2 then times 1000 ex:
70 mph (divide by 2.2 = 32 times 1000) = 3100-3200 rpm
60 mph ( " " " = 27.2 " " )=2700-2800
rpm
50 mph ( " " " = 22.7 " ")= 2200-2300
rpm
Fourth approx. 2 to 1 ratio
Third about 1.8
Second and first - listen to engine. You can tell if you are getting
close to rev. limit.
but, Second is about 1.5 and first is little less than 1.
But you just spent a ton on the new bike, why worry about another
couple of hundred dollars for a tach?

Thanks for your reply. Well, you know how you memtioned how I spent a
ton of money on the bike, what's a couple of hundred for a tach.? Well,
it's even more outrageous than that...... I won it in a raffle!!!!
Ok, OK, don't kill me. Anyway, I'm retired and just keeping it and not
selling it raised a few eyebrows. But the bike is awesome and very
different indeed than my 1977 old Kawa KZ-1000. Yes, I'm keeping the
super glide and I love the freak'n thing.
Thanks again, Tim fm CT

Don't let anyone tell you that you are too old, over the hill, or
going through a second childhood (but it ain't bad).
Retired since 1997. Explored several hobbies. Riding a bike is best
thing I have found yet. I have put over 65,000 miles on my
SuperGlide. Did Sturgis, SD this year. Almost 4,000 miles in 10 days
(watching the scenery, not racing point A to point B). Eight of the
10 days were in rain at least part of the day. Ready to do again.

If its been a while since you last rode consider a refresher riding
course. MSF Basic is good even for someone who knows how to ride. If
you are too proud to admit you need that, consider the Advanced
Course.
Most people who rode a long time ago learned to ride like they found
out about sex. Either just jumpin' on'er and going, or talking to
someone who didn't know what they were talking about.

My Super Glide Sport (02) smoothes out at around 3200 rpm. While
2300-2500 is as rough as it gets. The bike stays smooth up to 90 mph
maybe more but that's as fast as I feel safe in the short bursts in
freeway traffic in Houston.
You sound like me 30 years ago when I traded my 74 Z1 for a 76 FX. I
was riding it like it was a jap bike taking the revs up to red line
before each shift etc. The Harley motor really doesn't need to be run
like that unless you're running for your life or something. Smooth and
easy is the way to go. I rarely get much over 3 grand riding normally
between shifts. BTW 3200 rpm in 5th gets to around 75 mph, 70 in 4th
would probably be closer to 4 grand. That's on the 02 FXDX so I don't
know if the 05 Custom is similar.

Yes,
You make a very good point about the safety course. I don't mind
taking the basic course. In fact I'd rather use their bikes for the
panic stops etc. <VBG>

Thanks for your reply Harold.
Maybe, mine doesn't smooth out untill higher rpms for some
reason. I'm due for my 1000 mile check. (I've got ~850 miles on it.)
I'll have them check it out.
It sure is a whole different riding experience. It's grrrreat!

Tim, Don't know what a KZ1000 is but would guess its a four banger.
Harley's are different animals that Jap bikes (generally unless it's a
vertical twin that is designed after a harley) It has to do with being
an over square engine, torque, and that kind of stuff. You will break
your harley if you try to ride it like a jap bike. Just
remember............Speed Kills (speed refering to engine rpm) The
first four gears, five if you have a six speed, are to get you in fifth
gear. Then its time to kick back, profile, and or get on down the road.

Thanks to fellow super glide riders for your replies.
Yup, I was used to riding a four cylinder 1000 cc machine. The Super
Glide is an awesome experience, that's for sure. AS you all know it is a
whole different experience indeed. It seemed so surprising that the
custom did not come with a tach. I don't have a need to wind it up but
it is difficult not to in the first two gears. BUT NO COMPLAINTS... It's
just my own learning curve. I love my Super Glide.
Thanks again for all your great replies. NOw if I can only get out of
Harley dealers without spending $$$$$ on more chrome.. <VBG>
