motion on my softail [message #500083] Wed, 02 November 2005 03:06

My new deluxe with less than 6000 miles just developed a gentle shimmy,
left and right oscillation at all speeds, but worse at low speed and
when powering down. It is not rapid, a gentle and annoying left and
right motion that can be felt in the handelbars and is worse when the
handlebars are released. Anyone got any ideas? Balance? Wheel out of
round? Tire problem? Thanks.

My Deuce did that right after I serviced it......I'd adjusted the main
drive belt too tight (using a gauge and setting it to book specs). Made
it "chirp" and do exactly what you described. Loosening the belt up some
cured the problem.

thanks SteveI. I will take in for service this week, but I was hoping to
get an idea of the cause before I visit the stealorship. Stiff.

Check for cupping on the front tire. Inflate to correct pressure.
Could be other things, but I look for the obvious first.

Get yourself the service manual for your model. It's first suggestion
will be that the steering head bearings need to be tightened. The other
suggestions are all valid, of course, but bearing adjustment is the most
common.
