Here, I'm trying to economize on fuel, and the P5 runs a very fast idle
in the first few miles. Is there any fix for this? Can the computer
program be modified to change the idle? I really miss the screwdriver
adjustments of days gone by.

#1. No, you can't change the fast idle on a modern car.
#2. Do you really think the fast idle costs *that* much in fuel?
#3. Do you think your car would be driveable for those first couple
of minutes without a cold-start/fast-idle?
My '02 SE kicks out of fast idle within one mile. It's Not A Problem.

No, but if your temp gauge doesn't jump up to "normal" after 1 mile then
either it's incredibly cold weather or you could use a new thermostat.
These gauges are notoriously non-linear, hence the apparently rapid warm-up.
