On the stator plug ... are the metal connection pins usually flush with
the rubber plugs surface or recessed about 1/8 inch or more ...

They are recessed but I once read that you should trim them flush for a
better connection. I did that and my stator lasted 93,000 miles. I think the
only reason they ever go bad is a bad connection at the plug. The voltage
has no where to go and burns them up.
