95 Miata (no spark) [message #460484] Sun, 02 October 2005 22:01

Hello,
This is my first time posting to this site.
I was driving my wifes 95 Miata 1.8 ltr to work and it died. All the
electrics worked, except that it died (It happened at 4:30 am. So head
lights were in use.) I bought a new coil pack and that did nothing. Any
ideas of where I should look next? I looked at the timing belt and it
looks good (I replaced the timing belt about 3000 miles back.)
Any info would be appreciated. The temperature is now down in the 80's
and my wife wants her car back.
Thanks
Ron

You'll no doubt hear her say, "It worked fine when *I* drove it!" ;-)

Why do you say "No Spark"? Did you pull a spark plug, ground the outer shell
and crank the engine to see there was no spark? (I like this method better
than having a friend grab the connector and cranking the engine to see if he
lights up....)

Is there any malfunction code?

There's a bunch of things that will cause no spark, one common on ALL Ford
products is a bad ignition switch, very common in female operated vehicles
with a 150+ pound key chain.

Yes, about pulling a plug and grounding the outer shell. The engine light
was not on before the car died and the engine light is not on now. I
don't have an OBDII tester, but the parts stores here (O'Reilly and auto
zone) said that the car had to be running for the OBDII tester to work.
I've never used one of these testers so I don't know if this info is
correct or not. If the ignition switch went bad could that stop the
engine while I was driving? The engine cranks over fine it just doesn't
start.
Thanks
Ron

Yes, often after hitting a bump.

That doesn't sound like your problem because when the switch begins to go bad
the car will *usually* start if it's turned off and then started again.

Let's hope someone else can come up with some suggestions but I think I'd be
very tempted to tow it to a dealer unless I had a good service manual, it's
difficult to carry out any checks w/o knowing the locations of parts, pin
numbers of connectors, etc.

Ron,

You must make sure that the Cams are turning.

The timing belt turns the cam
The cam turns the crank angle sensor
The crank angle sensor fires the coil
and the coil fires the plugs.

have someone crank the engine, with the oil cap off inspect the cams and
check to see if they are truning while the engine is being cranked, if they
are i would generally advise that the crank angle sensor is faulty, but
check all necessory fuse and or relays.

Also check the wiring going along the top of the firewall. I know
from experience that if one of the wires gets damaged, the ignition
does not work.

Guys,
Thank's for answering my posts. The cams are not turning. Now have any
of you changed the timing belt? Is this something I want to do or is it
something to take to the dealership? I work on jet aircraft, I'm not used
to thinking in terms of reciprocating engines.
Thanks for your help.

You decide if you can handle it.

It's just like jet engine work: i.e. following a set of instructions. It's
a good opportunity to change out the spark plugs and wires, water pump,
maybe the crank and cam seals, tensioner, cam cover gasket and probably some
other stuff I forgot (that others will likely remember).
