Now that I'm 60, my wife thought I needed a boost and bought me a new
screaming yellow, 5 speed manual, GT for Christmas. Well, actually I'm
doing the paying, but she said OK, and that's about the same as buying
it!
While driving it I heard a 'thunk' coming from (I thought) the rear
end when I shifted or released and then applied the accelerator. I
thought maybe it was a loose u-joint, or some slop in the drive train.
Thirty years ago, I'd have thought nothing of it, but I decided to
take it to the dealer and have it checked out. Hell, the car has less
than 300 miles on it.
The service manager agreed that the sound shouldn't be there. After
about an hour in the shop, he came out and told me that Ford was going
to replace the transmission.
Other than that small glitch, I am in love with the car. My last
Mustang was a yellow '68. This one is somewhat speedier!
I will be reading and learning and questioning you guys and gals.
Please bear with me.

2 Weeks age I took my '03 gt in for it's 22k service and complained
about the same thunk coming from the rear as well as a rough shift from
1st to 2nd when cold. 2 weeks later I got my gt back with a new tranny
on ford as well.
Happy new Year!!

What did the dealer say the problem was? I also have a GT,(2003) but no
noise yet.
I'm over 60 too, last Mustang was '65.

Thanks. I would not have bought one unless I got the yellow. It's
beautiful. Definitely a head turner on the road.
Now, do I need racing stripes or not?

He thinks the problem is in the transmission. He didn't know what, in
the transmission, was wrong. When he called Ford he was told to
replace the transmission with a new one because the mileage was so low
(<300) rather than try to repair the transmission.
Now I'm kind of concerned that they will replace the transmission with
a rebuilt one. But maybe I'm just being paranoid.

Congrats on the new Stang, John! The yellow is awesome looking, no doubt!
Only you know if you *need* stripes or not. :-)
The picture of the yellow GT with the black stripes in the '05 brochure sure
looks cool! For what it's worth, my brother-in-law (in his 40s) said if he
was getting an '05 Mustang, he'd definitely get the Screaming Yellow one,
and he'd have the dealer put the Ford stripes on it as well. I'd prefer to
be a little more subtle myself, and have a Satin Silver GT on order, no
stripes. I am getting the red leather seat option, however, so that will be
kind of "loud."
But if you like the attention you're getting with the new car, then you'd
probably get even more if you added the stripes. Maybe some unwanted
attention even, like from Johnny Law. ;-)

Welcome aboard, John. You will learn a lot here for sure.
There are also a couple of forums with segments dedicated strictly to the
'05 Mustang, so you may even learn more over there. Try them out:

I personally like the 1st one better, but YMMV.
Good luck with your new ride!

Thanks Bill. I appreciate the response and the sites. I'll give them a
try.
I have a son-in-law who is already telling me I can increase the
horsepower up to about 380 with "only a blower and a K&N filter." I
have no idea what he's talking about, and can't see why anyone would
want even more horsepower from this think. It's a screamer as it is!
(Of course, being a 60 year-old who's driven a pickup for the past ten
years, my judgement may be cloudy!)

Hi. I was just lukin and saw this thread. I have a 2005 screaming yellow V6
coupe that my wife and I bought in October when they first came out. Anyway
we are members of the Yellow Mustang Registry and another member with an 05
had a similar problem as you did. She hasnt taken her in though. Is there
any other info you can tell me that i can pass along to her. Did they say
why they needed to replace the tranny? I have heard that some line going to
the tranny has a clip that has blown and caused tranny fluid to spray out
all over the undercarriage. So far we havent had anyproblems and we have
over 3500 miles on her. Anyway Good choice on the Yellow. I would also like
to tell you about the yellow mustang registry. It is a site for owners and
enthusiast of yellow mustnag. I would give you the url but dont want to be
accused of spamming so do a search for yellow mustang registry in google and
it will show up. Also I am in the process of making Boss stripes to put on
our 05. I attached a couple pics of the stripes.
