The same could be said about buying a litre class sports bike and
hardly ever riding it. I don't even try to justify it to myself
because I probably couldn't.

I spent 18k on a car. The justification was a piece of piss - "I want
one of those".

I know of someone who has spent 25k *preparing* his Matchless G50 for
the classic Manx GP.

Some people spend thousands of pounds following their football team.

My parents spent over 10k on a caravan. Madness, in my view, but it's
their life and their money.

In short - what's your point? Do you have a better idea what other
people should spend their money on than they do?

I think that pretty well sums up my wife's thinking when choosing the Mazda.
Also, the Mondeo we'd put a deposit on the day before wouldn't fit in the
garage, and she absolutely *has* to keep her car in the garage.

Well, pretty much every car thread (and there's lots of them here) you
trot out the line that you don't understand how people justify
spending proper money on cars. This, despite the evidence of your
eyes most days on the M4, that loads and loads of people can and do
justify it. So I guess I'm bored with this particular exchange - be
more entertaining, dammit!

So you have made it relatively straight rather than completely straight?

As Matt implies, gayness is inherent within BMWs. You can mask[1] it but
never remove it.

[1] SOldness being one of the more common techniques

Yep. High mileage doesn't necessarily mean "game over" these days. Granted
back in the 60's and 70's, it was more likely, but with better oils, more
frequent servicing and better roads, most reasonable "family" cars will
happily see 150,000 miles and not feel wobbly or shagged out.

I bought a 1990 Cavalier 8 years ago to use as a carrying wagon for work
related shite. 150 quid I gave for at, with 75,000 miles on the clock (and
who knows if they were genuine, coz I certainly don't) I ran it well past
150,000 with just one oil change and one cam belt change ad it still drove
well enough to sell on when I "upgraded" to a Honda Civic with a mere
113,000 miles on it.

That should be good for at least 3 years of every day shite carrying.

Think of any Japanese 'sportscar' and you'll understand.

Editing this post to read Japanese sportsbike will be considered a

Spot on. It is the cars from back then that would need a clutch every
25k, a gearbox and suspension rebuild at 50 and 100k on an engine was
reason to have an article in a magazine. Things have move on
considerably and are still moving.

I used to buy new cars every two or three years (depending on how
much/little I liked them) then I needed a mobile shed for carting crap
around, picking up materials for the bodyshop etc, and it opened my eyes to
cars. I wouldn't buy another new one now.

Yeah, a new one is nice, but that "niceness" only lasts for a week or two,
then it's just "the car" and before you know it, it's getting filled with
all kinds of stuff that doesn't belong in new cars.

I actually like knowing that the total cost of my last car was less than a
single monthly payment on my neighbours X5. *He* didn't seem to like it when
I mentioned it to him though.

You'd have got a laugh if you'd edited it to read Jewish racing gold

Would it be better if we referred to your bike as being either coral
(pink) or salmon (pink) ?

It's more plum (pink) really. In fact in the garage it just looks plum,
& not pink at all. It's a different story in the sunshine though.

She has actually just passed her test but she's 10 years older than
that.

I'm not suggesting Ben should buy something with 100k miles on it, just
that the difference between a car with 20k miles and one with 50k miles
on it is so negligible that I wouldn't worry about it - especially as
the 50k mile example is likely to be significantly cheaper and / or a
bigger, better, higher-spec. car.

Does not compute.

If she wants a car, she should bloody well buy it herself.....

Is that how it works in South Wales?

One of my neighbours bought a brand new one recently.

I can only assume, by looking at the panel gaps, that Blind Pugh must
have bolted it together.
