From this it is obvious that you, sir, ride like a girl.
My Gixer gets through a set of front pads every 4000 miles max, at
approx 95 quid a set. That's the trade price, by the way.

While possible, it's more likely that my right hand is busy holding
open the throttle so the f'kin thing doesn't stall every time I stop.
Also bearing in mind it isn't terribly fast to start with.. and the
pads are like rocks. From the 70's.

One of many reasons I don't own anything nearly so new / powerful.[1] I
just replaced the pads on the BMW with about 23,000 on the clock.
[1] Another being that I'd probably bin it right quickly.

That's not what this pile of citations sez.
Who says I'm proud of it? I'm waiting for those pads to die, die,
die... I'm just too cheap to change 'em before they're cooked.

I've just clocked what CB it is that you own. I can go long with that,
the pads on my old CB250RS were in that bike for at least 60,000 miles,
and showed almost no signs of wear. The brakes didn't work very well
when they were used, but you stopped eventually.

You really are easy on the brakes, aren't you.

Dear god I hope this set doesn't last that long.. They get the job
done, but that's it. I've got SS lines on there now, but it didn't
make nearly as much difference as I'd hoped / thought.

I don't *think* so, but I'd never really considered it till now - I
don't ride with others much so don't have direct comparisions. I'm not
a big fan of slowing down, anyways.

My 750SS still has them at 28k!

The pistons shouldn't retract a long way though, the rachet should
"rach" and stop them from coming back any further.

Yep, a new motorcycle would cure the problem for sure.

What ratchet?
Frag, have you ever taken a bike caliper apart? There are never ratchet
systems involved.

It's so easy to get cam tensioner and brake caliper mixed up. :)

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember Lozzo <lozzo [at] lozzo.org.uk> saying
something like:

The inherent rat shittiness of the rubber.
